| The Plano Java group meets to hold discussions. Think of us as a peer support group. Bring your ideas, thoughts, questions, and
your own coffee; all are welcome, from the experts to the greenhorns.
The group was formed in October of 1999. We started meeting in the cafe at Borders book store on Preston and Park. Although it was nice to have the coffee shop nearby, the space wasn't conducive to technical discussions, and without whiteboards or a projector to share source code, the meetings were "thin". When John Chapman joined the group shortly after it started, he made the CCU Call Center training room available and the group relocated. John, through CCU sponshorship, gave us a computer and projector that allowed us to share source code and a nice environment for discussions. We have since moved on to a lab room at SMU Legacy that provides us individual computers for some hands-on work. Attendance varies but we typically have 20 to 30 Java wannabees and gurus at our meetings. The group is made up of a variety of skill sets, experience and backgrounds but with one common bond; we all like (or want) to develop on the web and know we have more to learn. We want to expand our professional working knowledge and collaborate with peers. This entire site is a constant work in progress. The site is more than "a user group support site". It is a testing and play ground for various projects that the group comes up with. What you find on this site is the collective effort of the members of the group and represents the ideas and talents of a unique team. (It's like work, only it's fun and educational, we get to decide what we want to work on...oh, and that pay thing is missing...well, it was almost perfect.) After completing a fun little JDBC/Servlet project in one of our meetings in June 2000, we found that we'd run out of things to talk about. The idea of a website project was proposed. That discussion quickly grew into a series of potential projects that would give everyone an opportunity to expand their skills or to try their hand at something new without the typical "boring book" or "not real world" example approach. If you are new to Java, or web development and want a place to learn, ask questions and participate, come visit us. If you are an experienced developer and want a group to bounce ideas off of or need a play ground, we'd love to have you. Enjoy the site. Come back often, we should be adding new features all the time. We may change the server configuration and components from time to time just to experiment. Hopefully, everything works. If it doesn't, well, I guess we've got some more to figure out. Drop a note in the Yahoo Group Discussion Forum, we'd love to hear your thoughts. Better yet, stop by at a meeting.
